Let us understand the difference between UPS and Inverter:
Home-UPS-BatteryUPS is the short form of Uninterrupted Power Supply.  As the name suggests, UPS gives you immediate current when your main power goes off. The devices/equipment’s will not feel any interruption in the process of switch over, hence uninterruptible.   An UPS is a wholesome package that contains a battery and an inverter. The electricity stored in the form of Direct Current (DC) in batteries is converted to Alternate Current (AC) in order to power the electronic devices. This conversion of current from DC to AC is done by an Inverter. Thus, an UPS is wholesome package compared to an Inverter. Inverter is a device with the simple circuit system that converts DC to AC and cannot supply current without a DC source.

How to find batteries for Inverter & Home UPS?
Battery plays a very important role in determining the performance of the inverter or UPS.  So, choosing the best battery based on your requirements is vital. Batteries are selected based on their capacity. A battery capacity is the rate of current the battery can supply for a given duration; this is expressed in Ampere hour (Ah).  If your battery is not strong enough it might lead to Inverter not powering up or may to lead discharge issues.

Typical capacity of Batteries may vary from 100 Ah to 200Ah.

In SF Sonic we have three types of Inverter Batteries:

  • SF Sonic Power Punch
  • SF Sonic Power Box
  • SF Sonic Ready Power

SF Sonic also offers Home UPS battery.
These batteries are specially designed to withstand the Indian weather conditions.  Excessive heat during summer, leads more power consumption which results in frequent and longer power cuts in the country. SF Sonic Inverter and Home UPS batteries are specially designed to meet this demand.

UPS Batteries LifeUPS batteries are expected to have a lifespan of around 4- 5 years. However, with proper care and precautions, you can increase this life and make your UPS battery stay alive for a longer time.

There are few factors which adversely affect the life of UPS battery. Discussed below are some guidelines to assist you in maximizing the life of your UPS batteries.

Surrounding Temperature:
All batteries would have a limit which is based on the indicated conditions. The absolute working temperature for a UPS to be working stress free is 25°C (77°F). When the UPS is worked under these conditions, its life gets boosted. While the UPS will work in varying temperatures, it is to be noted that this will affect its lifespan. A general guideline is that for every 8.3°C (15°F) increase over 25°C (77°F), the lifespan of the battery will decrease by 50 percent.

Unit Replacement:
At the point of installation, it is mandatory that you figure out the best point of installation so that it is easily accessible. It is always advisable to install it in a temperature controlled environment. The UPS should never be placed near open windows so that it does not get exposed to dampness or get affected by dust. The ventilation openings on the UPS should not be blocked.

Protection:
Most of the UPS batteries being manufactured today are branded as maintenance free. This just means that these batteries do not require any liquid top up to be done often. It does not mean that proper maintenance is not required on these batteries.

Cycling:
Whenever the power fails, the UPS batteries immediately swing into action and provide backup power. When the power is restored, the battery will start reviving itself and prepare itself for the next power failure. This is known as cycling. The number of cycles that a UPS undergoes also determines its lifespan.

During installation, the battery is generally at 100% of its capacity. However, every cycle is bound to reduce the ability of the battery. Hence, it is always advised to monitor the cycling to foresee the life of an UPS.

How long will my UPS batteries last? This is one of the main questions that pops on everyone’s mind before buying a UPS battery especially when the current one starts giving out low battery signals. You are expected to replace your UPS batteries once it has reached a certain age or there is any reduction in its available run-time. Usually the average age of any UPS battery ranges from 3-5 years. There are 5 major aspects that determine how long your battery would last. It includes placement, ambient temperature, maintenance, battery chemistry, and battery storage. On a small scale, it also depends on the usage pattern. Based on the UPS model that you own, you can conduct various checks to ensure that the battery capacity has not faded.

However, the best replacement is when your current battery runs out of warranty.  Although a battery may last longer than its warranty period, there are no promises on that, but you can be sure that it will last during the entire warranty period. As it ages, the capacity reduces. This is one of the main reasons to replace ups battery at the end of its warranty period.

UPS BatteryOkay, it’s good news that you own a UPS to save you at your time of need. It supports your appliances and you don’t feel frustrated every time there’s a power cut. However, after a certain amount of UPS usage, you are bound to come in terms with the reality that your UPS battery is not able to support as longer as it did when it was brand new.  The reason being, your battery’s life is nearing its end and you better change it before its dead. Battery replacement in a UPS is not a mind bending task. You can do it yourself and don’t need to get any technicians involved in it.

To begin with, check the warranty period of your battery and if it hasn’t expired, contact your manufacturer and get a replacement battery. In the unfortunate event of the expiry of your warranty period, get a new battery from a reliable dealer or order online directly from the manufacturer.

Now, detach the front cover of your UPS by gently pulling it towards the direction indicated on your UPS. Generally, your battery would be safely encased within a battery compartment or held in place with a battery holder. Use a screwdriver and slowly unscrew the compartment or the holder (whichever is present in your UPS).  The next step is to remove the battery and pull out the battery leads from the connectors. Proper care needs to be taken during this step since the leads are still connected to the battery.

Now, attach your new battery with the leads. Ensure that no mistake is done while connecting the wires. Red wire should always be connected to the positive terminal and black should be connected with the negative terminal. However, there is a rare chance that there is a change in this color combination. So, it is always better to read the owner’s manual before starting the installation of your battery. It is now time to slide in the new UPS battery into the compartment or place it in the holder. After proper placement, ensure that the leads do not stick out. Finally, screw the door back onto the UPS and you are ready to start using your UPS.

After all procedures are completed, make sure your old battery is properly disposed because as battery ages, there are chances for chemical leaks which might lead to burns.
