Today’s cars may have become technically more complex, requiring expert hands to check and service them. That does not however, mean that car owners should remain in the dark about all the activities that happen under the bonnet. In fact, you should know your car best! You, who drive your car, should also be savvy of what else drives it. The best place to start is with the battery. Especially useful in an emergency situation, when your car does not start, it’s easier to rule out battery problems before calling in an expensive mechanic.

Learn to check your car battery

Requirements: You must own a pair of hardy gloves to prevent acid splashes, burns etc., Protective glasses and a digital multi metre to check battery charge levels.

Steps to check battery:

First locate it: Open the bonnet and the car battery will be the first thing you see. If in any doubt, check your car manual. It will tell you exactly where the car manufacturers have placed it.

Get your car ready for the battery test: First turn off the car completely – you wouldn’t want to get a shock! Then only open the bonnet.

The multimetre: Know its parts. Your multimetre will contain two leads coming off it. One black and the other red. It will have buttons to mainly show:

• AC Voltage and AC Current
• DC Voltage and DC Current
• Diode test button that can shift to Capacitometre
• Ohm setting
• Ammetre Terminal
• Common ground
• General Terminal

Checking battery with the Multimetre:

It will have a screen to show charge reading.

1. Your multimetre’s black lead goes to the negative end and the red to the positive end. If interchanged, you won’t get a reading at all.
2. Once the leads are fixed, bring Multimetre to DC Voltage setting and check you voltage as you turn it on.
3. Note the number that flashes on the screen
   Roughly this is what it means: 12.66 V means the battery has a full charge.
   12.45V means it has around 3/4th charge. 12.24 V means it’s half charged. From here to up to 11.89 means you have marginal charge…enough for you to take it to a mechanic for a recharge. Anything less (11.89 ) means your battery has zero charge and that’s the reason why your car is not starting!

For the last two readings, you need to really recheck battery with professional equipment.

Note: Low charge does not mean battery has to be completely junked. It may be possible to recharge and get it going. However, if it does not hold the charge even after professional charging then you know it’s time for a change of battery!

Do deep discharge: Active material can drop off the plates and fall to the bottom. When this accumulates at the bottom of the case, it will short the plates together and kill the battery.

Overcharge: Certain methods like long periods trickle charging can lead to over-charging.  This tends to oxidize the positive plates, continued overcharging can corrode the plates or connectors till they weaken and break.

• When you top up, use only distilled water (de-ionized if possible) and use protective gloves and do it in an ventilated area
• Keep the top free of grime
• Keep checking for damages or loose connections
