Simple Ways to Check your Car Battery in India

Steps to check battery:

The multimetre: Know its parts. Your multimetre will contain two leads coming off it. One black and the other red. It will have buttons to mainly show:

• AC Voltage and AC Current
• DC Voltage and DC Current
• Diode test button that can shift to Capacitometre
• Ohm setting
• Ammetre Terminal
• Common ground
• General Terminal

Checking battery with the Multimetre:

It will have a screen to show charge reading.

1. Your multimetre’s black lead goes to the negative end and the red to the positive end. If interchanged, you won’t get a reading at all.
2. Once the leads are fixed, bring Multimetre to DC Voltage setting and check you voltage as you turn it on.
3. Note the number that flashes on the screen
   Roughly this is what it means: 12.66 V means the battery has a full charge.
   12.45V means it has around 3/4th charge. 12.24 V means it’s half charged. From here to up to 11.89 means you have marginal charge…enough for you to take it to a mechanic for a recharge. Anything less (11.89 ) means your battery has zero charge and that’s the reason why your car is not starting!

For the last two readings, you need to really recheck battery with professional equipment.

Note: Low charge does not mean battery has to be completely junked. It may be possible to recharge and get it going. However, if it does not hold the charge even after professional charging then you know it’s time for a change of battery!
